Spring 2003: On a visit to study the Cass shays in the   spring of 2003 we found that the boiler had been removed from Cass 6 and was on the floor of the shop as shown on the right.  A new boiler had been installed on the locomotive

Spring 2004:  On a subsequent trip in the spring of 2004 we found that the old boiler had been moved to a flat car as shown below.   On that trip I took a few photos and measured the major sections of the boiler.  It was a good thing I did because in June 2004, the boiler was gone.

This photo is looking into the smoke box.   Note that the tubes have been removed.   It is my guess that the tubes were removed in preparation to overhaul the boiler.    Inspection at that time probably revealed that the boiler needed to be replaced.
Looking through the tubes holes from inside the fire box.  The firebox and smoke box have both been thoroughly cleaned a, a further indication that a boiler overhaul had been planned.

The fire box door opening as seen from inside the fire box.
Corner drain holes and the blow down pipe in the center.  This is the front side of the firebox.
This is a photo of the new boiler showing the location of the blowdown.
This photo shows stampings in the side of the old boiler.  I think it says the boiler was manufactured on February 25, 1924.    The working pressure was 200 psi.
Update August, 2004:  On this visit I found the old boiler again --- way down a storage track.  I was able to check all the measurements taken previously and correct a few minor errors ---- it's not easy to measure the dimension of the firebox area because of the rounded corners.  This time I took a couple rear view photos from a higher position to show the steam chamber output opening and the hole for the throttle rod.
This close-up gives a better view of the back of the steam chamber.

Boiler Drawings:  The drawings on right and below were made from measurements taken on the old boiler.   The section of boiler directly behind the smoke box is a slightly smaller diameter than the smoke box.  That area of the boiler will have a larger diameter than the smoke box after the lagging and jacket are installed.

These drawings are combined into the single file that can be downloaded from the Drawings page.
