Changes & Additions

Many folks are visiting the site often to check the Shay Project and check for progress on the Heisler.   I began to have trouble remembering what I did when so started to think about a list of changes & additions and then realized that others might find such a list useful so here it is.   Note that starting on St Patrick's Day 2004, links are provided to the changed or added page at the suggestion of a non Irish friend.  However, in early April  2006 links to Heisler Project pages before then were remove because files were reorganized and the pages moved. Hopefully that's the last major reorganization

5 Dec  07 A 3D rendering of the engine and two engine animations contributed by Lennard Sihlis have been added to the Heisler Engine section of the Heisler Project.  
18 Sep  07 Photos of a scale model East African Railway 59 class Garrett locomotive added to the Garrett Locomotives of the East Africa Railroad  page of the Photos section.

27 Mar 07 The shop has been cleaned up in anticipation of moving.  The clean shop is shown in an updated version of the Works page.   
24 Feb 07 The Heisler frames are finished!  Several pages have been added to the Frames section of the Heisler project to describe the construction.  All of the frame design pages have been updated to reflect changes made during the construction.   
21 Jan 07 Several additions were made to the Construction and Reference Links page.  A page was added to provide information about Wayne Godshall's Custom Machining operation. 
10 Jan 07 The Frame Construction III page describing the fabrication of the front sill bracket, the saddle and the rear sill was to the Frames section of the Heisler project.  The Frame Design II and Frame Design III pages were also updated to reflect minor changes in these parts to match what was actually fabricated.
10 Dec 06 The Frame Construction II page describing the fabrication of the frame sides was to the Frames section of the Heisler project.  
23 Oct 06 The New Burner page describing a oil burner mixing chamber has been added to the Operation Section of the Shay Project.  
1 Oct 06 It's been a while since the site's been updated.  However, there has been progress.  Some of the Heisler engine castings have been received.  The last mold for the Heisler engine is at the foundry and the foundry is back to making the castings after a couple glitches with a few molds were fixed. The Heisler frame sides are nearly complete.  Several modifications were made to the Shay burner and it runs really well. All this will be documented in the coming months as the weather in Ohio makes it too nasty to work outside. 

Work at Mill Creek Central and updating that web site is also taking  a lot of time.  Check out the website and be sure to look at the "Trestle" and "Big Dig" projects. We're making a push there to get as much done as possible before the weather turns.

Also note that the NLW home page has been modified to show a date of the last modification in the link to this page.   This will enable folks to quickly determine the date of the latest changes. 

17 Jul 06 The Frame Construction I page describing the fabrication of the slotted center frame stiffeners was added to the frame section of the Heisler project.  
9 Jul 06 The Casting page of the Heisler project was updated to show a photo of the first set of five castings types to arrive.  
9 Jul 06 Just returned from five weeks in Costa Rica.  Took the computer along and used the many free hours to get some Heisler design work finished.  The  Overall Design page was updated to list may more items and many design decisions.   The Frames section was expanded to show the complete frame design as well as the tender frame design  The plumbing section was split into the Brakes, Lubrication, Steam Plumbing and Water Plumbing sections    The Boiler & Burner section page was split into a Boiler section and a Burner section.   These splits will allow a narrower focus to each section.
22May 06 The Shay Power & Tractive Force page was added to the Operation section of the Shay project.  This page show calculations and measurements of the staring tractive force as well as thoughts about the power generated by the shay.   There a many photos showing a pair of shays pulling a long string of cars over the hilly Mill Creek Central track.   
17 May 06 The Engine Construction I section was added to the Engine section of the Heisler project.  Minor changes were also made to The Engine Design I, Engine Design III, Engine Design IV and Engine Design V and the associated Engine Drawing files.   
24 Apr 06 The shaft in the Shay Blowdown valve broke.  A commercial valve was found that fit in the available space so the original valve wasn't repaired.  Photo of the new valve is at the end of    Shay Plumbing Part VI - Blowdown Valve
15 Apr 06 Some changes were made to the Heisler Engine Design I page to correct errors and to improve the design. The associated drawing pages have also been updated to reflect the changes. 
9 Apr 06 The Boiler Design I page was added to the Boiler, Burner & Superheater section of the Heisler project.  This page shows the overall dimensions of the model boiler for the model.
8 Apr 06 The Finishing Gears page describing finishing and paining the gear cases and installing wheels on the geared axels was added to the Gears & Shafts section of the Heisler Project.
8 Apr 06 The Heisler Project files were reorganized.  Links were removed from earlier Changes and Additions to the Heisler Project listed below because they didn't work with the new file structure.
30 Mar 06 The Heisler Truck Construction   section was added with Wheel & Axel Construction page. 
27 Mar 06 The Heisler Model Truck Design I page was updated to show a change in the crank pin design.
26 Feb 06 The shay is in the workshop for annual maintenance and a few improvements.  The brake valve has never worked properly so decided to make yet another brake valve and have operating brakes this summer.  This latest design replaces the design previously shown on page Another Brake Valve.
23 Feb 06 The shay is in the workshop for annual maintenance and a few improvements.  One improvement  involved the steam powered air compressor/water pump.  The O-Ring seals were changed from EPDM to Viton except for the water piston O-Ring which was changed to Buna-N.  A displacement lubricator was added to the steam input line.  These changes are shown in Air Compressor/Pump Part II,  Air Compressor/Pump Part III  and  Air Compressor/Pump Part IV
23 Feb 06 The shay is in the workshop for annual maintenance and a few improvements.  Robert Calhoon a set of Shay gear covers last fall.  I finally got around to installing them.  They worked out great see: Shay Drive Shafts - Gear Guards.
10 Feb 06 The shay is in the workshop for annual maintenance and a few improvements.  Recall that the blowdown valve used an O-Ring that was predicted to have a short life.  The valve was disassembled and the O-Ring was found to be undamaged after two years of service.  A photo of the valve interior was added to the end of Shay Plumbing Part VI - Blowdown Valve
2 Feb 06 Several improvements were made to the design and construction of the cross compound air compressor.  One design page (Part V) was added to the Heisler Model Plumbing Design section and a construction page (Part IV) was added  to the  Heisler  Plumbing Construction section.
8 Jan 06 The design and construction of a cross compound air compressor was completed --- finally.   Four design pages were added to the Heisler Model Plumbing Design section and thee construction pages were added  to the  Heisler  Plumbing Construction section.
2 Nov 05 The Lubricator Construction page added to the plumbing construction section of the Heisler project.
2 Nov 05 The Lubricator Design I & Lubricator Design II pages added to the plumbing design section of the Heisler project.
19 Oct 05 Photos of Emile Moussu's Shay added to Photo section. 
17 Oct 05 The Using O-Rings on Piston Valves page was added to the Heisler Plumbing Design  section of the Heisler project.   This page describes the tests of O-Rings on piston valves.
17 Oct 05 The Check Valve Designs page was added to the Heisler Plumbing Design  section of the Heisler project.   This page describes the design of three small commercial check valves.
24 Sep 05 The More Improvements page was added to the Operations Section of the Shay Project.  This new page describes use of quick connect fittings on the tender water hoses and a much improved fire pan.    
21 Sep 05 The Heisler Plumbing Construction section  was added to Heisler project.  The Axel Pump Construction  page was added to this new section.    
19 Sep 05 The Heisler Plumbing Design  section page was added to Heisler project.  The Axel Pump Design  page was added to the new section.

29 Aug 05 The Heisler Middle Gear Construction  page was added to Heisler project.  The  Middle Truck Gear Design page was also modified to incorporate a redesign of the gear box. The Gears & Shafts Drawings (TCW format), Gears & Shafts Drawings (DXF format) and Gears & Shafts Parts List files were also added.   
21 Aug 05 The Heisler Gears & Shafts Construction   section was added to Heisler project.  This is the first of the construction  section.   The section  initially contains one page describing the construction of the outside truck gear system.   The  Outside Truck Gear Design page was also modified to incorporate minor changes made during the construction.   
21 Aug 05 The Heisler Model Frames Design  section added to Heisler project.  This section initially contains one page describing the frame sides and frame bolsters.  
20 Aug 05 The Heisler Model Universals & Shafts  page of the Heisler project design was updated to include photos of the casting patterns. 
17 Aug 05 The Heisler Model Truck Design III  page of the Heisler project was updated to include photos of the casting patterns. 
1 May 05 The Works  section was updated to shown the current workshop machinery. 
30 Apr 05 Heisler Model Gears & Shafts section was added to Heisler Project.  The section initially one page on the shaft and universal design and two pages describing the design of the outside and middle truck gears. . 
30 Apr 05  In the  Heisler Model Truck Design section of the Heisler Project minor changes were made to the Heisler Model Truck Design I & II pages and Model Truck Design Page III was added.. 
30 Apr 05 Heisler Model Castings page was added to Heisler Project.    Previously part of the casting information was included in the Heisler Engine Design II page. . 
9 Apr 05 Heisler Model Truck Design section was added to Heisler Project.  The section initially contains  two pages covering the wheels, axels, rods and truck sides. 
28 Mar 05 Page Engine Design VIII of the  Heisler Model Engine Design section of the Heisler Project was modified to show changes to engine valve components and photos of casting patterns were added. The Design Drawings were also updated to reflect these changes.
25 Mar 05 Pages Engine Design VI and  Engine Design VII  of the  Heisler Model Engine Design section of the Heisler Project were modified to show changes to engine valve components and photos of casting patterns were added. The Design Drawings were also updated to reflect these changes.

20 Jan 05 The files in the Heisler Project part of the web page were reorganized in preparation for adding data on the design of a model.  The data on the full size locomotives such as Cass 6 and MRSR91 were grouped together under references and a Ref prefix added to the associated folder names.

23 Aug 04 All the drawing files on the Drawings page of the Heisler project were compressed (zipped) to reduce the file size.  Links to drawings on other pages of the Heisler project pages were changed to go via the Drawings page. 
20 Aug 04 Some interesting history on Potlatch Lumber #92 (s/n 1502) was added to the Heisler Page. 
18 Aug 04 Minor corrections were made to the Frame pages and Trucks pages of the Heisler Project.  The associated Drawings were also corrected. 
15 Aug 04 Several photos added to Cass 6 Boiler page of Heisler  Project.  Minor corrections also made to Cass 6 Boiler drawing  (see Drawings).
